The Standing Order

Mara tends an officially dead lighthouse on Black Rock because routine is easier than returning to the mainland. Then a crate arrives for Elias Croft, keeper deceased since 1971, containing lamp oil, six bowls, and a log entry dated tomorrow. The deliveries are funded by descendants of shipwreck survivors who believe Elias's forbidden light saved them after the government extinguished it. Someone has begun changing the order to lure modern vessels onto the same reef. Across eight episodes, Mara and historian Leonie Voss reconstruct Elias's last storm, expose a salvage scheme hiding inside local legend, and decide whether the light belongs to the state, the island, the dead keeper, or no one.

Read excerpt

The rain had come through at four and gone east by six, and it had left Black Rock the colour of a wet slate roof. Mara wrote the weather into the station log, as she had on a thousand mornings, before she let herself look at the slip. There was a crate on it. It was dry. It was stencilled E. CROFT, KEEPER 1147, and Elias Croft had been dead for fifty-five years.

Di world

Black Rock

Black Rock is a decommissioned lighthouse outside Port Blight, maintained by Mara as a historic station and emergency refuge. Its old supply order outlived the keeper who signed it, the company that filled it, and the public budget that once paid for it. The lamp can still save a vessel or wreck one. Every eerie occurrence has more than one plausible cause: weather, neglected machinery, grief, local conspiracy, or something the story refuses to settle for the reader.

Who you go meet

  • Mara

    Mara

Historical-site caretaker and emergency light keeper

Mara keeps the historical site and its emergency lights with solitary competence. Her maintenance ledger records weather, visitors, repairs, and every unopened crate before she permits herself a conclusion.

  • Elias Croft

    Elias Croft

Last official keeper of Black Rock

Elias Croft, Black Rock’s last official keeper, survives in meticulous records that living witnesses interpret differently. His provisioning code gives practical detail to a history increasingly shaped by legend.

  • Silas Hempstead

    Silas Hempstead

    Supply-boat captain and harbour contractor

Supply-boat captain Silas Hempstead is dependable in weather that keeps officials ashore. His tide-stained route book turns local knowledge into leverage while making that dependence sound entirely reasonable.

  • Dr. Leonie Voss

    Maritime historian and incident investigator

Maritime historian Leonie Voss is curious without being credulous and always asks who benefits from a comforting legend. Transparent chart overlays help her find old rescue lanes beneath modern routes.
