The Agri-Committee is in uproar. Botanist Mira has filed a petition to open a single drawer of the sacred seed vault to combat a blight ravaging the cassava crop. Engineer Kael denounces it as a violation of the Charter that could doom the mission. Councillor Yara mediates, her calm authority barely masking her ambition. But when the committee inspects the vault, they find drawer 7-C already ajar, its seal broken. Someone has beaten them to it, and the crime threatens to unravel the fragile fabric of deck society. The reader arrives as an impartial observer, a newly appointed auditor from a different deck, tasked with investigating the breach. Over eight chapters, they navigate the humid corridors and committee chambers, interviewing suspects with tangled motives. Mira’s secret lab, Kael’s doctored logs, and Yara’s whispered deals all come to light. The trail moves from the physical evidence in the vault to the alibis of the key players, and finally to the hidden agendas that pit them against each other. In the end, the reader must weigh the evidence they have gathered and decide who broke the seal. The final chapter brings every suspect into one tense committee session, where the clues converge and the reader’s deductions determine whether justice is served or the ship descends further into factionalism.

Read excerpt

The wax on drawer 7-C has been lifted clean on one side and cracked on the other, as if someone patient had started and someone hurried had finished. Nine Councillors stand in the cold of the Seed Vault looking at it. Nobody touches anything. Auditor Rhea, who arrived from Deck 2 an hour ago, sets a numbered brass tag beside the drawer and asks, very politely, who last saw it sealed.

Di world

Ark Verdant

Ark Verdant is a self-contained generation ship, a cylindrical world of rotating decks and artificial sunlamps, four decades from its destination. For over a century, its inhabitants have lived in a carefully managed ecosystem where every resource is cycled, every calorie accounted for. The Agricultural Deck is the ship's green heart—a vast, terraced expanse of soil beds, hydroponic bays, and pollination corridors that sustains the entire population. Life here is warm, close-knit, and governed by a quiet but fierce sense of duty; the Agronomy Committee oversees planting schedules, soil chemistry, and crop genetics with near-religious reverence. But the ship is aging, and its systems are showing strain that no one wants to acknowledge. The central conflict is between the truth of the failing soil and the political will to maintain the illusion of stability—because admitting the problem means admitting generations of mismanagement, and the blame could tear the community apart.
