On the Ark Verdant, agronomist Tamsin Cole has spent her life tending the crops that keep humanity alive. But when she notices subtle anomalies in the Ninth Harvest cycle—wilting that shouldn't happen, nutrient levels dropping despite perfect protocols—she realizes the soil is failing. Her colleague and partner, Lena Voss, has the data to prove it, but presenting it means accusing their predecessors of negligence and inviting the Committee's wrath. As they dig deeper, they uncover a cover-up spanning decades: the soil was never as healthy as the records claimed, and the current Committee will do anything to keep that secret. Tamsin and Lena must navigate a web of political pressure, personal loyalty, and scientific truth, while the clock ticks down to a crop failure that could starve everyone. With help from a skeptical elder agronomist and a young apprentice who idolizes them, they race to find a solution—but the real battle is convincing the ship to face the truth before it's too late.

The terraced fields stretch out in gentle curves, the air heavy with the scent of wet soil and the faint ozone tang of the artificial lighting. Irrigation pumps hum a steady, reassuring rhythm.

Die Welt

Ark Verdant

A generation ship where the agricultural deck is a sacred trust—and a quiet crisis threatens everything.

Ark Verdant is a self-contained generation ship, a cylindrical world of rotating decks and artificial sunlamps, four decades from its destination. For over a century, its inhabitants have lived in a carefully managed ecosystem where every resource is cycled, every calorie accounted for. The Agricultural Deck is the ship's green heart—a vast, terraced expanse of soil beds, hydroponic bays, and pollination corridors that sustains the entire population. Life here is warm, close-knit, and governed by a quiet but fierce sense of duty; the Agronomy Committee oversees planting schedules, soil chemistry, and crop genetics with near-religious reverence. But the ship is aging, and its systems are showing strain that no one wants to acknowledge. The central conflict is between the truth of the failing soil and the political will to maintain the illusion of stability—because admitting the problem means admitting generations of mismanagement, and the blame could tear the community apart.

  • Tamsin Cole

    Protagonist

Tamsin is the lead soil agronomist on the Agricultural Deck, a role she inherited from her mentor a decade ago. She grew up among the terraces and knows the scent of healthy soil better than any sensor readout. In the last two years, she has watched the crop yields dip below safety margins, and she's the first to…

  • Lena Voss

    Deuteragonist

Lena is the youngest full member of the agronomy team, a brilliant botanist with a talent for reading soil microbe interactions. She was born on the Ark and has never known anything but recycled air and artificial seasons, but she dreams of the world they're heading toward. Her enthusiasm is infectious, but it masks a…

  • Chair Yuen

    Antagonist (political)

Chair Yuen leads the Agronomy Committee with a cold, efficient hand. She is a career politician in a world where politics means managing resources and morale. She sees the soil crisis not as a scientific problem but as a threat to her authority and the ship's stability. She will not tolerate dissent that could cause…

  • Elder Marrick

    Antagonist (reluctant)

Elder Marrick was once the lead agronomist and Tamsin's beloved mentor. Now he sits on the Elder Council, a bridge between the past and the present. He knows the soil better than anyone alive, and deep down, he knows Tamsin is right. But he's spent decades maintaining the ship's delicate social balance, and he fears…

  • Kip Farrow

    Tritagonist

Kip is the deck's systems analyst, a quiet, awkward genius who lives in the data streams. He monitors soil sensors, water recycling, and atmospheric balance, and he was the first to spot the anomaly: a slow, systemic drop in nutrient cycling that no one wanted to see. He's not a farmer—he's a numbers person—but he's…

Audit #4439 fixes BUG-3205: the fall-through that comment describes was never actually written, on either side. This rendered `play_count|default(0)` and discovery-detail.js repainted `play_count || 0`, so a story whose counter is stored as `session_count` or `active_players` -- both of which the API allowlists for public disclosure -- told every visitor that nobody had ever played it. The order is play_count, then session_count, then active_players, and it is spelled the same way in discovery-detail.js's `playerCount`; the two must agree or the number changes under the reader a beat after load. `|default(none) is not none`, not `or`: a real 0 is an honest answer and must not fall through to a nonzero sibling. #} 1 Spieler
