PG-13
Tonight is the final broadcast of WVAL, the Appalachian valley’s beloved community radio station. In the cramped studio, four people face the microphone for the last time: Emmett, the gruff station manager who’s given his life to this place; Sully, the quiet night engineer who knows every crackle and hum of the equipment; Lottie, the passionate young DJ who’s never stopped fighting for the station; and the reader, an unnamed witness who has stumbled into the booth to help pack up—or so they thought. As the on-air hour ticks down, a sudden catastrophic failure silences the transmitter. The backup fails. The station is dead before its time, and it’s clear someone made sure of it. With the valley listening and expecting answers, the four must decide what to say on air about why they’re going dark. But the truth is tangled in years of secrets: an illegal power boost, a farm fire, a pirate signal in the hills, and a young woman’s desperate plan to save the unsavable. Phone calls from listeners bring the outside world crashing in—memories, accusations, and one voice from the past that changes everything. The reader must sift through conversations, search the studio for clues, and piece together a timeline of betrayal before the final sign-off. Every choice of what to pursue reveals another layer, but the clock is relentless. By the end of the hour, the culprit is exposed, and the station’s fate is sealed—but what the reader chooses to do with the truth will echo long after the signal fades.

The Valley Dial

In a tight-knit Appalachian valley, a volunteer-run radio station is the town’s heartbeat—until its licence is challenged from within.

The Valley Dial is a small, independent radio station broadcasting from the basement of a converted church in the fictional town of Bitterwood, nestled deep in an Appalachian valley. Founded in 1978 by a group of residents who wanted to preserve local music, stories, and emergency communication, the station runs on a shoestring budget and the dedication of its volunteers. The station’s single AM tower on Bald Knob is a local landmark, and its signal reaches the hollers and farms that cell service forgets. The station’s licence comes up for renewal every eight years, a process that has always been a formality—until now. The community is woven together by church suppers, high school football, and the familiar voices on the radio. The station’s programming is an eclectic mix of bluegrass, local news, swap-shop call-ins, and preachers’ sermons. The volunteer hosts are known by name and voice, and the station is a source of pride. But beneath the surface, generational tensions simmer: younger volunteers want to stream online and play indie folk, while the old guard insists that AM is the only way to reach everyone. The valley itself feels both isolated and eternal, with misty mornings, winding gravel roads, and the constant hum of cicadas in summer. The world of The Valley Dial is one where secrets don’t stay buried forever. The station’s logs, old tapes, and the memories of its listeners hold the history of the valley. When the licence renewal is suddenly challenged, the volunteers must dig into that history and confront the fact that the station’s most familiar voice may also be its greatest threat.

  • Character 1

Station manager, the one who made the decision

Character 1 grew up in The Hollows, the child of a coal miner and a schoolteacher, and inherited both a deep love for this valley and a pragmatic streak that borders on ruthless. After a brief stint in the city—where they earned a communications degree and learned how easily outsiders dismiss mountain voices—they…

  • Character 2

The estranged sibling, the wild card

Character 2 is Character 1's younger sibling, and they left The Hollows nearly two decades ago under circumstances no one talks about. They've been living out west, drifting between jobs and relationships, never quite finding their footing. News of the station's closure reached them through a stray social media post…

  • Emmett

Young DJ, the heart of the station

Emmett is twenty-three, born and raised in The Hollows, and the station is the only job he's ever wanted. He started volunteering at sixteen, fetching coffee and filing records, and worked his way up to hosting the evening bluegrass show. For him, WVAL isn't just a radio station—it's the voice of his people, a…

  • Lottie

    Investigative journalist, the outsider's conscience

Lottie isn't from The Hollows. She moved here five years ago after burning out at a big-city newspaper, looking for a simpler life and a story worth telling. She found both at WVAL, where she started as a volunteer news reader and quickly became the station's de facto investigative reporter. Her segments on local…

  • Sully

    Old-timer engineer, the station's memory

Sully is a bear of a man in his sixties, with a white beard and a laugh that rattles the studio windows. He's been the station's engineer since the day it went on the air, and he knows every quirk of the transmitter, every scratch on the turntables, and every ghost in the wiring. He came back from Vietnam with a bad…

Audit #4439 fixes BUG-3205: the fall-through that comment describes was never actually written, on either side. This rendered `play_count|default(0)` and discovery-detail.js repainted `play_count || 0`, so a story whose counter is stored as `session_count` or `active_players` -- both of which the API allowlists for public disclosure -- told every visitor that nobody had ever played it. The order is play_count, then session_count, then active_players, and it is spelled the same way in discovery-detail.js's `playerCount`; the two must agree or the number changes under the reader a beat after load. `|default(none) is not none`, not `or`: a real 0 is an honest answer and must not fall through to a nonzero sibling. #} 1 Spieler
