The Winter Assay

por Smagik

In the depths of a Baltic winter, the Assay Office of Kühlhaven discovers a one-gram daily discrepancy in its amber ledger. Master Assayer Grigory, a man who trusts only his scales, must find the source of the error before the spring thaw brings outside scrutiny and ruins the guild. The suspects are few: the quiet clerk Elina, the rough Captain Reiner, and even Grigory himself, whose own meticulousness hides a secret debt. As Grigory digs into the weigh-slips and interviews his colleagues, he uncovers small deceptions that point in multiple directions. The weight of evidence shifts like ice, and the frozen port becomes a pressure cooker of suspicion. Each chapter peels back a layer of the crime, revealing that the theft is not of amber but of faith—and the culprit is the one who needed that faith the most.

The ink has frozen in the well again. Grigory warms it over the lamp, as he has every winter morning for forty years, and runs his finger down the Mariensand column. Intake against assay. One gram short. He weighs his father's copper coin on the pan, the way he always does, and the pan does not lie. Yesterday was one gram short too.

O mundo

The Frozen Ledger

The port of Kühlhaven clings to the Baltic's frozen edge, its lifeblood the amber trade that pauses when the sea turns to iron each winter. Inside the stone Assay Office, every lump of amber is weighed on brass scales before it leaves, the numbers scratched into ledgers by candlelight. The guild masters are meticulous, suspicious men who trust only arithmetic—until the arithmetic begins to lie. Outside, the world is white silence, broken by the groan of ice and the chime of sleigh bells. Inside, the air is thick with resin dust and quiet accusations. The assayers, clerks, and shipmasters are bound by cold and commerce, each carrying secrets as carefully as they carry their scales. A single gram, invisible to the eye, becomes a crack that spreads through the season of darkness.
